Creating decorative aquatic bowls can be a fun and artistic project while also using spare plants seedlings from you main aquariums. below is a how to guide to creating these miniature works of art, alternatively check out my how to video over on our youtube channel.
To start you will need a glass/plastic bowl safe enough to hold water. start by adding your chosen substrate, i personally use aquatic soil but sand or stones also work ( be sure to use fine pebbles for the roots to grow ). Next i fill the water level just over halfway and wait for the water to clear, then using tweezers ( or hands if they fit ) push the base of your cuttings or seedlings into the substrate, the water level should be high enough to help hold your plants in place, try to arrange them decoratively i usually put the smaller plants such as aquatic grass or java moss to the outside then the taller plants into the middle, this ensures you get a full view of all your plants at every angle. I would also advise not placing near or on a window ledge or a position that gets lots of direct sunlight, this is due to the fact that the bacteria on your plants ( from your fish tank) will start to grow algae and trust me cleaning algae from something very small is a nightmare.
make sure to have fun, and try using easy grow plants that do not require much co2 or food, remeber these are live miniature aquascapes which are a great way of growing out young plants to add to your fish tank at a later date.
